Tünböri, the fresh blood of the Turkish black metal scene, released their debut full-length album “Güneş Tuğ Ol, Gök Kurıkan” on April 4. The album stands upon a thematic foundation centered around Turkish history, mythology, and literature. This approach points to a field that has long been overlooked within the Turkish black metal scene; as such, it is fair to say there has been a noticeable void. Tünböri, however, appears to have delivered a work poised to fill that gap—one that feels built to endure.

Tünböri is a duo consisting of Körmös (Ave Sanguine) and Sazakan (Ohol Yeg). With their debut recording, the “Kurt Başlı Sancak” EP released in 2025, they made an assertive entrance onto the scene. The arrival of their first full-length in 2026, without leaving a long gap after the EP, clearly demonstrates that the duo does not regard Tünböri as a mere home recording project.

The album carries a deeply dark and old school sound. Tremolo picking plays a defining role in the guitar work, while the driving force that reinforces this structure comes from the prominent use of blast beats on the drums. All instruments are performed by Körmös, who also handled the recording and mixing; the result is a production that is raw and unpolished, yet allows every instrument to be heard with clarity. With vocals that do not overpower the instrumentation, the record achieves a cohesive whole that strongly evokes the spirit of the ’90s Scandinavian second wave black metal sound.

Sazakan, known from Ohol Yeg, delivers a highly accomplished performance on vocals. While his previous work stood out with a more niche and distinctive vocal character, here he develops a different vocal texture tailored to Tünböri’s sound, elevating the album’s overall impact by a significant margin.

Looking at the lyrics, it becomes clear that Tünböri constructs not only a musical identity but also a coherent and fully realized conceptual world. Drawing from the language and stylistic cadence of the Göktürk inscriptions, the archaic narrative interweaves Turkish mythology, state tradition, and a martial ethos to create an epic and ritualistic atmosphere. Tracks such as “Bilge Kağan,” “Motun Börü Tonga,” and “Kür Şad İhtilali” foreground historical figures and collective memory, while pieces like “Börü Budun” and “Güneş Tuğ Ol, Gök Kurıkan” elevate themes of unity, kut, and törü into something approaching a martial anthem. Recurrent phrases such as “Öd Tengri yaşar” reinforce a sense of timelessness, while symbols like the “wolf-headed banner,” “iron mountain,” and “Ötüken” form a strong mythopoetic backbone. Although there are very few examples in the Turkish black metal scene that center these themes, a comparable approach could be observed in Diabolical Raw’s 2022 album “Elegy of Fire Dusk.” Tünböri, however, handles this rarely explored thematic ground in a far more cohesive and convincing manner.

As for the artwork, while the band’s logo is undeniably strong, the cover of this debut full-length leaves the impression that a more original visual concept could have been pursued. The image of a howling grey wolf beneath a full moon is one that has been widely used for years by various associations, cultural circles, and other groups, and has consequently become something of a cliché. A more distinctive visual approach might have further enhanced the album’s overall impact.

Taking a step back to assess the album as a whole, with its strengths and shortcomings alike, “Güneş Tuğ Ol, Gök Kurıkan” stands as a highly exciting and successful release for the Turkish black metal scene. Blending the genre’s musical and conceptual potential with local elements, this is a record that unquestionably deserves attention.
