ASSUMPTION Bends Death Doom’s Sense of Time with “Paradox Of The Arrow”
ASSUMPTION bends time through crushing riffs
Italian Death Doom band ASSUMPTION are preparing to reshape the genre’s heavy, slow-moving framework through the concepts of time, movement and stillness on their third album, “Paradox Of The Arrow”. The album is due out November 13, 2026 via 20 Buck Spin, and the track ‘Tombs Upon The Sun’ has now been made available.
‘Tombs Upon The Sun’ stands as one of the first examples to directly reveal the album’s musical approach.
Since their early recordings, ASSUMPTION have treated Death Doom not as a genre bound by fixed rules, but as a space in which mass, duration and atmosphere can be manipulated. “Paradox Of The Arrow” pushes this approach further, creating a structure that obscures the distance between passages and the progression of the music through time.
The band’s heavy low-end foundation remains intact on the new album, but the tracks do not rely on sheer density alone. Riffs unfold heavily over extended stretches before accelerating into sudden Death Metal passages, then retreating once again into prolonged stretches of stillness. Dissonant guitar resonances and atmospheric passages emerge between these shifts, while guttural vocals rise from the deeper layers of the music. At times, the drums measure out vast spaces with restraint; elsewhere, they disrupt that structure with unexpected ruptures.
The album’s central idea is rooted in Zeno’s paradox of motion, after which it takes its name. Based on the notion that an arrow in flight is motionless when observed at any single instant, the paradox is directly connected to ASSUMPTION’s musical approach. Across its six tracks, the album uses transitions between movement and stillness to blur the perception of linear time.
This approach is particularly evident in the succession of extended passages and sudden musical eruptions. As ASSUMPTION continually shifts the listener’s perception of duration and scale, melody is used in fragmented and indirect forms rather than through conventional resolution. Psychedelic touches emerge mostly in the background, helping make the quieter passages as consequential as the heavier ones.
The artwork for “Paradox Of The Arrow” was created by Mariya Popyk. The album was mixed and mastered by Claudio Mulas at Art Distillery Studios in Modena, Italy.
“Paradox Of The Arrow” will be released via 20 Buck Spin on November 13, 2026.
